After identifying critical skills gap in its report, Skills for Immersive Content Creation (Bennett, Murphy Jan 2020), and an urgent need for immersive talent to drive production innovation in media, StoryFutures Academy devised a Bootcamp and Placement programme to help plug these gaps and give the industry much needed momentum and a way of overcoming a major barrier to growth.

Bootcamp & Placement

BBC Strictly Come Dancing was another world-famous brand looking to immersive technologies for creative ways of innovating. This was partly in response to the pandemic and the challenges of large studio teams working on a live show while needing to socially distance, and partly the need to attract new and younger audiences. Visual design company, Potion Pictures had started to experiment with creating virtual sets using Augmented Reality (AR) which reduced the need for rapid labour-intensive set changes between dances. They partnered with StoryFutures on a “Toolbox for creatives” Bootcamp aimed at arming creatives with key technical and design skills (including understanding how to use game engine in the creation of digital content). It was Bootcamp participant, Ryan Garry who had some experience of motion capture and was incredible keen to extend his skills to work with a much broader set of VR and AR production tools, who won the placemen. At Potion Pictures his learning curve was steep as he was tasked with creating AR sets for the most watched Saturday night show in the country!
